How Many Hills to Hillsboro by Fred Bauer. Copyright 1969

Fred Bauer and his family of five takes a bicyle ride across America. They start in New York and hope to end in Oregon. Hillsboro is a town in Oregon, thus the name. They don’t make it all the way but have lots of adventures on the way.

It was interesting to learn that Fred Bauer once worked for Guideposts and was a roving editor at this writing.

Pictorial History of American Presidents by John and Alice Durant. Copyright 1955.

This book gives the life of the presidents from George Washington to Dwight Eisenhower with lots of pictures included. I must not have read this book after picking it up for I just found a copy of Guideposts (February 1970) within its covers. I have received Guideposts for many years and will enjoy reading this issue.

The Strength of the Hills by Elswyth Thane. Copyright 1950.

Ahh. Elswyth Thane, now there is an author I recognize. She has written quite a few historical novels some of which I have in my library. You can see that my library is not organized at all.

This book tells of her experiences tending the farm which she bought in Vermont.

The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas. Copyright 1942, 55th impression 1949

This is the story of the soldier who tossed for the robe of Jesus Christ and won. Douglas has written quite a few books but this one is considered the wisest and most deeply felt of all his novels. I have seen the movie and it is very good.

I see this book is lacking a bookmark so I must find one.

Healing The Sick by T. L. Osborn. Copyright 1977, 26th edition.

It’s called a living classic. The subject: God says “I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

I had the joy of attending one of Osborn’s meetings once. I’ve always believed I was healed in that meeting. Before that meeting I had often had to go see a chiropractor but after that meeting I noticed I never needed one. I hadn’t felt anything but I decided I must have been healed.

A Reverence for Wood by Eric Sloane. Copyright 1965

This is the only book I have by Eric Sloane. He is the author of many books mostly about early Americana. Reverence for Wood tells about the many uses of wood in early America and even gives descriptions of many trees.

I like this book because I also have a reverence for wood. I have a hard time letting go of old things made of wood. The bookmark in this book is made of wood–Eastern Red Cedar.

Freckles by Gene Stratton Porter. Copyright 1961

When a teen, I read a book by Gene Stratton Porter that was in our home library and I so enjoyed it that I started collecting books by her and they are some of my most prized books. She writes of nature, romance and a little mystery thrown in.

Freckles is a guard in the Limberlost and has many adventures and meets the Angel.

The Light and the Glory by Peter Marshall and David Manuel. Copyright 1977.

This book strives to answer the question, Did God have a plan for America? From Christopher Columbus to George Washington it answers this question. A great read for this time.

Peter Marshall is the son of Catherine Marshall, another great writer. We will run into some of her books later on.

Nina’s Books, Apr 13

Today I am doing two books. They are both small, less than 200 pages.

In His Strength by Gwen Wilkerson with Betty Schonauer. Copyright 1978.

Gwen is the wife of Dave Wilkerson which we met in “The Cross and the Switchblade”. This is her turn to tell her side of the story.

I Loved a Girl by Walter Trobisch. Copyright of English version 1963.

This is the story of two young Africans in love. The story is told by letters between the pastor and the two young people.
